Foreword by Venkat
Knowledge gives the power with potency to re-evaluate our experiences and bring new perspectives, sometimes with great insights. Such insights serve as a wedge to weigh our beliefs, values, behavior and performance. Thus, they increase our awareness of the limitations we may be carrying in terms of beliefs, approach and bias. Like invisible microbes, these ‘micro-biases’ remain intangible until they manifest with a heart-wrenching impact in the results or in our relationships – as diseases do. This underlines the importance of upgrading ourselves with new information from quality research as well as the role of awareness as a ‘catalyst’ for transforming ourselves for the better.

In this article, Alexis makes us aware of nine cognitive biases we may be trapped in, which deeply influence and may hinder clarity in our communication. The information presented is insightful and backed by research. Hoping this wonderful post from Alexis benefits everyone.

9 Cognitive Biases That Undermine How We Communicate

Did you know that, according to research:

  • Employees at large companies who perceive bias are nearly three times as likely (20% vs. 7%) to be disengaged at work.
  • Those who perceive bias are more than three times as likely (31% to 10%) to say that they’re planning to leave their current jobs within the year.
  • Those who perceive bias are 2.6 times more likely (34% to 13%) to say that they’ve withheld ideas and market solutions over the previous six months.

As Humans it can be challenging to recognize our cognitive biases, they live in our subconscious just beyond our conscious awareness. However we can pull them into awareness by knowing how to recognize them, then choosing to take action to reign them in. Being honest, when you reflect on yourself can you recognize any of these in your own life and leadership? Be brave and share your experiences below!
